In 1990, G. Scott Thomas rated Hattiesburg sixth for overall livability for cities under 100,000 in his Rating Guide to Life in America's Small Cities. Then in 1992, the city received the Livability Award for cities under 100,000 from the United States Conference of Mayors. Hattiesburg is also a certified retirement city offering state of the art medical facilities that include The Hattiesburg Clinic that has 200 specialists representing every field of medicine.
Hattiesburg is also the home of the University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey College. Both offer theater, concerts and exhibits that reflect our southern culture. USM and the Southern Miss Eagles offer multiple college athletic venues such as football, basketball, baseball and soccer. USM reaches out to the community by offering the Institute for Learning in Retirement which conducts classes, seminars, a luncheon lecture series and other activities.
Hattiesburg is also well known for many festivals that have been known to draw crowds of 55,000-80,000. They come to downtown Hattiesburg to experience the food, crafts and music of the Arts Festival and the Pecan Festival.
Hattiesburg celebrates the seasons as well and in December you can find beautiful candlelit Victorian homes in Hattiesburg's Historic District as well as the annual Holiday Parades down Main Street. In April, the homes and blossoming dogwood trees surrounding Lake Serene can be seen during the Dogwood Festival.
Hattiesburg and local area woodlands offer plenty of lakes, streams and wooded areas for hunting, fishing, hiking or camping. Paul B. Johnson State Park provides a great lake and cabins for a weekend getaway. Other interesting sites are the Kamper Park and Zoo, the All-American Rose Garden. Hattiesburg also has 15 area golf courses with many open year round.
